Dos Granjeras - 2020 Quality Award Winner
Author | groundwork coffee Date | April 29, 2020
Every year we award a farm our annual Groundwork Quality Award. This award goes to an exceptional organic coffee. Winners receive $1 additional per pound of coffee we buy from them as well as a cash prize and coffee brewing gear hand-delivered by our Chief Coffee Guy, Jeff Chean, the following July. This year's recognition was awarded to Colombia's Carmen Paladines and Bertha Rosas, whose collaboration on our new Dos Granjeras Limited Reserve Coffee was truly remarkable.
Carmen and Bertha (left) are hardly strangers to us at Groundwork. They are members of of the AMUCC Organic Project, a 100% women-owned farming coop in Colombia, from where we source our top selling Colombia single origin coffee. The Groundwork and AMUCC relationship started years ago and we proudly support their work through above-market, direct-trade buying practices.
AMUCC came out of a desperate need for women to take over farming roles to support the Colombian economy. After years of upheaval in Colombia, there was an absence of men in communities. Women found themselves as the de facto heads of their households — with all of the accompanying responsibilities, but none of the rights. Enter AMUCC, a Fair Trade certified association of women in Cauca empowering female coffee producers as they step up to fill that vacuum and bring about positive social change. We fell in love with AMUCC — both their coffee and the people behind it. We realized that it's just the sort of community that Groundwork is looking to partner with. At the group's request, we're paying an additional $0.25/lb. to fund an interest-free revolving credit line, which will help the certified organic farmers meet short-term cash flow needs and make farm equipment upgrades. On top of the premium attached to all Fair Trade coffees, Groundwork has committed to pay a $0.06/lb. premium dedicated to supporting AMUCC’s ongoing organic programs.
