In the coffee world, becoming a "Q Grader" signifies attaining essentially the highest level of mastery one can attain. Officially, a Q Grader is someone who has logged the intense hours of sensory education and studying to pass the rigorous Coffee Quality Institute exam (CQI). Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming one of our own into this coffee club of the olfactory elite.
As you might imagine, having a few Q Graders in the midst of a coffee company is imperative to setting a high bar. The Q Grader functions as the translator between farmer and roaster and buyer and drinker. In an ideal world, such as ours, the roaster is also the Q Grader. Because their senses are so deftly trained, this person is able to decipher the subtlest notes and flavors in a given coffee's process from bean to bag. At Groundwork Coffee, we're fortunate to have three on our team:
Give it a try the next time you take a deep inhale of a brand new bag of beans. Take notice of the various notes you pick up on. What do you pick up on from the aroma, the sweetness? Does it change the way you sip your favorite coffees?
