Sencha Organic Green Tea
Author | groundwork coffee Date | September 27, 2016
Background: The most popular tea in Japan for centuries, Sencha tea is rapidly becoming an acquired taste in the West where consumers are learning to appreciate its sweet, earthy notes.
Sencha tea undergoes a unique processing in that it is first steamed for 15-20 seconds to prevent oxidation before it is oven-dried. This initial steaming produces a significant variance in the flavor profiles of different Green teas, with Japanese Greens like Sencha having a more vegetal, almost grassy or seaweedy flavor, as well as a greener, more vibrant color than Chinese Greens like Gunpowder.
In the Cup: This organic Japanese Green tea is rich and full-bodied with subtle notes of fresh grass and sweet herbs.
Perfect Brew: The flavor of brewed Sencha is highly dependent on water temperature and can be easily tailored to your taste. For a mellow, soothing cup, you should brew at 175-185°F; if you want more of a punch, try the 185-195°F range. In either case, avoid steeping for more than 2-3 minutes to prevent bitterness in your brew.
