Spotlight: Ethiopia Heirloom Blend

As the birthplace of coffee, it’s no wonder our Ethiopia Heirloom blend is a Groundwork staple and a best-selling single origin coffee. Highlighting the best flavors of the region, this coffee combines both washed and natural processes to bring together a dynamic blending of both flavor profiles: clean, sweet, and articulate with deep fruit notes and a silky texture.
As coffee comes from a fruit, it has very distinct growing and harvesting seasons and, as such, the product can vary season after season. Ethiopia has one of the widest ranges of flavors on the coffee spectrum from floral and citrusy to wine-y, fruity and chocolatey. By combining the best of each growing season, we are able to offer a consistent single origin blend that tastes delicious year round.
“Single origin blend”?!
Isn’t that an oxymoron? Not really. The term "single origin" in the coffee industry can mean a lot of different things. Some roasters use the term to describe a coffee that is exclusively from a specific region or country as opposed to multiple (i.e. Ethiopian beans blended with less expensive coffees). More commonly, we use it to denote more specificity in the coffee's sourcing, often down to the farm or coop.
Until very recently, all the coffee varieties used in our Heirloom Blend were from the same farm in Ethiopia. We use the term “blend’ because we combine washed and natural processed beans together to produce the best tasting coffee that will highlight the flavors we think are unique and special. Sometimes a grower will change their practices in an unfavorable way or walk away from their organic certification entirely, requiring us to find new sources. While our preference is always to work directly with a single farm or small association, when this isn’t possible, we’re grateful to have a strong network of growers producing great organic coffee.
Brewing Heirloom Blend
A light roast coffee, our Ethiopia Heirloom Blend is incredibly versatile. It brews a perfectly balanced pour over in a Chemex, works well in a traditional at home coffee maker and can even be used to make a sweet and juicy shot of espresso. Try a bag for yourself in our online store.
