UNECAFE (Unidad Ecológica para el Sectore Café Oaxaqueño) is a Rainforest Alliance and Organic-certified cooperative whose membership is made up of 39 indigenous communities from various coffee growing regions in Oaxaca. UNECAFE’s Carbon Sequestration Coffee program brings together 400 of its small holder coffee farmers from indigenous communities along Oaxaca’s coastline. This reforestation project will help these farmers protect their lands from erosion, restore heavily logged areas, and mitigate the effects of climate change. Most importantly, it will diversify their sources of income by generating carbon credits that can be sold on the open market. All the participants are certified by the Rainforest Alliance as sustainably managed farms.
