Groundwork Roastery in North Hollywood
In the middle of Cleon Avenue, in North Hollywood, our 5,000 sq. ft. building sits inconspicuously among the parking lots, loading docks, and constant truck traffic. A closer look, however, tells a more interesting story. Solar panels cover the entire roof of the structure and draw enough energy from the sun to power the entire building. Pallets of coffee sacks, swollen with fresh green beans, appear briefly in the sunlight as they are whisked into the building’s loading bay on the tines of whirring forklifts.
Inside, steel racks filled with cases reach to the ceiling. The cases hold every imaginable product
necessary to stock a well run coffeehouse. Syrups in countless flavors crowd the shelves next to vanilla
and chocolate powders. All types of Chai are stacked and categorized next to pitchers, pump pots and
espresso pods. Along one long wall, a row of towering silos hold more than 25 varieties of green coffee
beans. And in the middle a massive dark green coffee roaster sites like the beating heart of the entire
building. The 70-kilo roaster is a marvel of old and new technology, a blend of the traditional and the
This is the groundwork roastery, where everyday a battalion of employees make use of every
conceivable nook and cranny of the building to produce, pack and ship coffee and tea for their
customers. The cupping room does triple duty as a training center and lunch room. The tea room
presents a dizzying array of colors, scents and textures as fragrant herbs, teas and spices are blended
by hand. The loud whoosh and clomp of an industrial bagging machine provides a steady rhythm to the
humming background noise of the coffee roaster.
Coffee roasting can be a fairly violent process where green coffee beans are exposed to
temperatures approaching 500 degrees. There’s flames and smoke, and noise, and a lot of sweat. But at
Groundwork the job is half the fun. The other half is drinking the fruit of our labor.
