Our Products

Where are your products shipped from?

All of our organic coffee, tea, and merchandise is shipped directly from our roasting facility in North Hollywood, CA.

What is Certified Organic?

Organic is at the forefront of all we do at Groundwork Coffee, from buying only certified organic (i.e. pesticide-, herbicide-, fungicide-free) coffees to roasting those same coffees using our industry-leading, solar-powered technology. As one of the first Certified Organic coffee roasters in Southern California, we've been pioneering organic, relationship-based, and sustainable coffee sourcing since the early '90s. When it comes to pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides, coffee is the third-most sprayed agricultural crop in the world. Most major coffee producers coat their crops with a witches’ brew of toxic chemicals to fight intruders and increase crop yields. That said, the question is not whether these chemicals make their way into your morning cup. At peak temperatures above 450 degrees, the roasting process will most likely burn off any residual chemicals. The real question is, what do these chemicals do to the environment and communities where they are sprayed? The data is clear; the effects on groundwater, nearby crops, and people’s health are well documented.

In addition to being better for those growing our coffee, we believe that a commitment to organic simply produces better coffee. Without the advantage of herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides, coffee farmers have to take better care of their trees to experience the same quality and crop yields per tree as their non-organic competitors. Organic farmers have to choose viable soil and water sources in order to avoid adding synthetic nutrients later. They have to grow their coffee at higher altitudes, which dissuades many insects and parasitic plants, resulting in a slower-developing, more complex-flavored coffee bean. Organic farmers have to accept a trade-off of lower overall yield in exchange for a more biodiverse habitat. In return, coffee roasters and their customers pay them a premium to continue the practice. We think it’s money well spent..

What decaffeination process do you use? Does it still have caffeine?

Swiss Water is an innovative, 100% chemical free decaffeination process. The Swiss water process uses only water, temperature, and time to gently remove caffeine, while preserving all the coffee’s original characteristics. Coffee decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process is 99.9% caffeine free.

Why don’t you sell cold brew online?

Our Cold Brew is pure, and unadulterated with no additives or preservatives. We don’t currently offer it online because of it’s perishable nature - we want only the freshest product shipped to you. Because so many of you love our Cold Brew, we are currently working on a sustainable, cold shipping option.

Why is my coffee oily?

The presence of oil on a darker roasted bean usually means that it has been recently roasted. The oils start to dry up if roasted coffee isn't used for a while.

How much caffeine is in cold brew?

On average, a cup of cold brew coffee contains around 200 mg of caffeine per 16 ounces (473 mL)

Where can I use your gift cards and E-cards?

Sustainability

What are Groundwork Coffee’s sustainability practices?

Being Organic is only a portion of our commitment to sustainability and producing better coffee for you and the environment. At our North Hollywood roastery, over 100 solar panels cover the structure’s roof, drawing enough energy to power the entire building. These Sunpower PV modules are the most efficient panels commercially available and will generate more than 52,000 kilowatts of clean solar energy each year and are designed to work efficiently even on cloudy days. In 2011, we installed a unique hybrid/gas-electric coffee roaster that utilizes an ultra-low NOx power burner. This allows the roaster and catalytic oxidizer to be heated by electrical elements tied directly from the power generated by the solar panels. The result is Groundwork’s roaster has one of the smallest carbon footprints in the entire coffee industry.

Are your coffee bags and cans recyclable/biodegradable?

Thank you for thinking about your environmental impact!

Groundwork Coffee is proud to use Biotre™ technology to reduce the environmental impact of our coffee bags - contributing less waste to landfills. Biotre® bags are made from plant materials and 60% can break down in a relatively short period of time.

-The outer layer consists of cellulose from wood pulp. Natural Kraft paper on the outside makes up 60% of the material by weight and breaks down into healthy compost in 12 weeks.

-The inner layer consists of 100% plant-based, renewable resources (i.e. cane sugar).

Can your cafe cups be recycled?

Both our cafe cups (hot and cold) and lids are able to be recycled and composted (BPI certified). Thank you for doing your part!

Are your bags compostable?

Because sustainability is one of our core principles, you can now learn more about our eco-conscious approach on our bags.Additionally, we chose earth-friendly Biotrē™ bags to package our beans. These bags are made from 60% renewable plant-based resources by weight, which break down into a healthy compost.
